The evocative and varied landscape of the Salento, adorned with stupendous coasts now high and jagged with a myriad of caves and crevices (east coast, Adriatic sea), now soft and sandy (west coast, Ionian sea), intrigues and attracts the lover of natural beauty.
We are in the Marina di Leuca, whose origins are very ancient, as evidenced by the numerous Messapian, Greek and Latin engravings found inside the various cave caves present. The “De Finibus Terrae” Sanctuary is remarkable , since 1990 a papal basilica, dating back to 1720, formerly a temple dedicated to Minerva and still today a pilgrimage destination for many faithful throughout the year. The place where the Sanctuary stands takes the name of Santa Maria di Leuca , in honor of the Madonna di Leuca “De Finibus Terrae”, which is celebrated every year on August 15 with a characteristic procession by sea. Next to the Basilica is the giant lighthouse (48 m high, the second in Italy after that of Genoa) which came into operation for the first time in 1866. To be immortalized are the splendid nineteenth-century villas on the enchanting promenade that the noble families of the second half of the 19th century competed for to carry out in the wake of a lavish fashion launched in those days by the inspiration of talented engineers and architects.
The hinterland of Capo di Leuca is characterized by wonderful rural settings with expanses of olive groves as far as the eye can see, punctuated by the classic dry-stone walls and by the characteristics ” pajare “, dry stone farm buildings. The small urban centers offer valuable examples of art and architecture from the Romanesque to the Baroque, traditional uses and customs still intact (handicrafts, wrought iron, typical local products in general).
It is now commonplace that Salento is Lecce, Gallipoli, Otranto. NOTHING MORE FALSE! We are perhaps a little far away, but it is really worth to do a few more kilometers and visit the extreme edge of the Salento, the so-called Capo di Leuca, a much less chaotic and more livable area than the most popular places and relax more! Wouldn’t you like to see the union line of the Adriatic and Ionian seas? It is located 3 km from Serine. The most famous beaches of Salento are 12 km from Serine. We are in a strategic position, on the tip … equidistant from the two coasts. And the beautiful caves of Santa Maria di Leuca? According to Gallipoli you do not visit them … We are waiting for you!
